There are many dog protections on the market against ticks and other parasites. For Taki, we tried these methods, where each of them has a different effect, application, length of protection and especially the price. That is why I would like to share with you our experience with pipettes, collars and anti-tick solution.
Tick pipettes
Pipettes against ticks protect the dog for about 1 month and then it is necessary to apply another pipette. Pipette is applied behind the dog’s neck (from above). The dog should not come into contact with water or get wet about 2 days after application.
We tried Fypryst tick pipettes twice for our Taki, but this protection was uncomfortable and expensive. The pipette must be applied once a month and costs about $10 / piece, so the “tick season” would cost $60. That’s why we switched to tick collars.
Collar against ticks
The antiparasitic collar protects against fleas and ticks for about 8 months. It is classically applied to the dog’s neck and is sold in various lengths according to the weight of the dog. The length of the collar can be shortened to the required length with scissors.
For our Taki we chose Bayer Seresto antiparasitic collar size 70, the price is around $22. This waterproof collar lasts the whole “tick season” and is odorless.
From the experience with this tick collar, I can say that it really works. After walking in the tall grass, Taki and I took off 30 ticks that just didn’t stick to the skin.
Fennel tick solution
Recipe for a solution against ticks: crush fennel, steam with boiling water and leave to infuse in a glass for at least a week, then put in a sprayer and spray the dog and himself before the walk. It should work for about 2 hours, so it is enough for a classic walk. Cloves work similarly. Store the solution in a cool place.
Ticks made of tall grass, fields or forests will not stop us!
